Built to support sharing and sustainability
A local charity empowering residents to reduce waste, share resources and learn practical repair skills — all through a clear, purposeful website.
The brief
Share (Portsmouth) is a community-led charity with a mission to reduce carbon, waste and raw material use through sharing, repairing and re-use initiatives across the city.
The organisation runs projects such as Repair Café Portsmouth and the Portsmouth Library of Things — services that bring people together to fix items, borrow tools, learn skills and save money.
Their existing online presence lacked a unified structure to showcase:
-
Accessible information about repair and borrowing services
-
Clear pathways for volunteering and donating
-
Community stories and events
-
Visibility for impact and sustainable living education
The objective was to build a structured, welcoming web presence with clear calls to action and easy navigation for diverse audiences — from volunteers to local residents looking for services.
The challenge
Share (Portsmouth) had a mission — but no cohesive online home to match it.
Key considerations included:
- Communicating complex community services clearly
- Encouraging engagement from a broad audience (residents, volunteers, donors)
- Balancing educational messaging with action (borrow, repair, workshop booking)
- Reflecting the charity’s warm, inclusive ethos
The site needed to feel accessible, credible, and welcoming — without overwhelming visitors with information.
The Solution
Strategy
We structured the content around the core user groups:
-
Community members seeking to borrow or repair
-
Volunteers looking to help
-
Supporters and donors investing in impact
Navigation prioritised the charity’s key activities: Borrow, Repair, Workshops, Donate, and Community News.
Design
Design choices were intentional and community-focused:
-
Clean layouts to aid discoverability
-
Soft but purposeful type hierarchy
-
Accessible colour contrast
-
Welcoming imagery supporting the charity’s messaging
The interface had to feel approachable for all ages and reflect the charity’s mission of sustainability and collective action.
Development
Built on WordPress with flexible content areas, the site features:
-
Clear service pathways (Borrow, Repair, Workshops, Unwanted Items guidance)
-
Integrated calls to action for donations and volunteering
-
A dynamic news feed to highlight events and community initiatives
-
Responsive layouts for all devices
“Having a dedicated website gives us a strong base to share what we do, reach more people and bring together our community around repair, reuse and sustainability.”
